‘Scaly Scaling’ is a 2D Puzzle / Platformer developed over the course of around 3 days for the GMTK 2024 Game Jam. I worked on this with a team of 4 (myself included); three of us tackled programming and implementation, two of us tackled art and visuals (myself included this time!), and one of us worked on the sound design. we all contributed to the overall game design too.
Unlike most of the previous game jam projects I’ve worked on (save for one), this one was developed in the Godot Engine; I personally don’t have as much as experience with it as I do with Unity, so I let the two other developers ‘take the lead’ so to speak; they were responsible for implementing the main gameplay mechanics (such as movement, the falling blocks, stage hazards). This time around, I did all the art, character design, and animations for the game; I still have a hard time animating, but I think I am getting slightly better at pixel art. On the programming / engine side of things, I implemented the menus, gameplay manager, audio manager, as well as animations and sequences, like for dying or collecting a bug.
I always lament how most of my game jam entries (and game projects in general) feel unpolished; while there are still elements I wish I was able to complete in time (such as a proper animation for the ‘BUG GET’ text, or complete screen-fades), I think this is a notable improvement over my previous projects, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to work on elements that I previously didn’t really get to tackle as much as I’d like. Overall, I’m really happy with the work our team put into this entry.
